Drowning in Fittings- May 8, 2009
Sex and the City is a brilliant series. The main character is especially lovable and iconic in American culture. Many try to mimic the style/life of Carrie (the main character), yet most are inorganically duplicated (on purpose). In a specific episode, Carrie is engaged to Aidan and expresses her nervous attitude toward the marriage. In an attempt to debunk Carrie’s nerves, Miranda (Carrie’s friend) suggests they go try on the ugliest wedding dresses they can find. When Carrie is in the dress she has a nervous breakdown, demanding Miranda to rip off the dress due to the fact that she can’t breathe. Post trauma Carrie adorns a rash that surrounds her whole body; she takes it as a result of stress and/or a sign that the marriage isn’t right.
Since, this weekend I’m attending prom with one of my better friends I had to rent a tux, of course. Therefore, I needed to try on the tuxedo in order to ensure the fit. As I was putting on the tuxedo I could feel my heart as if I were running. As I stepped in front of the multiple sided mirror I couldn’t stop shaking. It wasn’t until I had the tuxedo completely off until I could recover a calm pace. Although this incident may have lacked drama compared to Carries, I felt a parallel between the two.
Ultimately, I don’t think I am excited about the Prom. It is another traditional event. Moreover, it is an event that has to be done exactly as it is planned and everyone must participate. It is closely connected to the idea of marriage; I don’t agree with ideas of this background. To explain, they both are traditional ideals that everyone must participate in at one point. Furthermore, both have traditions which must be followed exactly. I’m not sure of the reason why the fitting resulted in this type of allergic reaction. Possibly, my body is under abnormal stress trying to squeeze me into another form I need to fit, yet as some are aware, I have always been an undefinable shape unable to fit in any of societies molds. Overall, I hope I don’t break out in hives, or worse…ACNE.
